Extreme sports: not just for the kids

Horse-riding, windsurfing, skiing – we get into some extreme sports while we are young, don’t we? With good nutrition, regular exercise and chiropractic care there’s no reason why we can’t keep on doing these as we get older.

In fact I know there’s one guy who’s still windsurfing throughout the year off the Kent coast in his 80s. If you want to keep moving… Keep moving!
Unfortunately we can sometimes let life get in the way and distract us from the good choices available to us. This is what happened to Ali Yates. (Thanks to Dr Christian Farthing at BodyWell Group who sent me the link to Ali’s article at Boards magazine: http://boards.mpora.com/features/windsurfing-and-weight-loss.html)
Ali is a great example of how a challenging work environment coupled with unhealthy eating can lead to changes in our body that stop us from pursuing the activities we love. After years off the water, Ali began to manage her weight – losing 5 stone – and even though she thought windsurfing wasn’t for her any more, she gave it another shot.
I think the photo accompanying this story tells you exactly how she feels about that!
I’m sharing Ali’s story because she’s a great inspiration for taking control of your health, your weight, your activity… And getting back to the life you always wanted.
But here’s another lesson you can learn from Ali. She didn’t do it alone. In her case she joined a Slimming World group. When you are making big changes to your lifestyle it can really help to have a team on your side. That could mean your doctor (busy guy, not actually an expert in being well) or it could mean your chiropractic/wellness doctor.
After years of carrying extra weight, it’s quite likely that your back isn’t in the shape it once was. Any vertebral misalignments (subluxations) will be exacerbated by weight loss and spinal adjustments will be required to restore your spine to optimal health. Combining weight management advice with spinal health care will give you the body confidence you need to get exercising again as well as making healthy food choices. Here’s a link to an earlier post all about managing weight naturally with corrective chiropractic care.
Having restored your spine to its natural position, you’ll find that your posture and core strength are also improved – you could be back in the saddle, on the board or on the slopes this time next summer. Now that’s what I call an inspirational goal!
